Description

Not certain if this falls under "support" or "bug".
As easy as it is to export (a subset of) all courses... it's not documented in any manual how to import your exported zip-files.

As for single course imports... certain data doesn't get backed up:
- visible/invisible course elements
- autolaunch learning paths (imported paths are invisible by default)

I have the impression it is a great way to import a course to extend a different course. But as far as I can see, it's impossible to have a full "carbon copy" of a course on a different server.

Hi Jurgen,

There is no way, in Chamilo, to have a "carbon copy" of a course. In fact, there's no LMS with that feature, that I know of.

Carbon copies are complicated because they involve copying user data, which might generate progress duplication in some cases (if a document uploaded by a user is copied maintaining user ownership, then globally the user has virtually uploaded 2 documents, so stats are accumulated) and there are many other reasons why we cannot just copy everything.

This being said, we can fix very specific things like the elements you mention:
  • visible/invisible course elements
  • autolaunch learning paths (imported paths are invisible by default)

So I'll turn this task into that and schedule it for 1.11.0.

Could you be more specific with the "visible/invisible" course elements?

Well... in the course I backed up, I only had 3 course elements visible:
- documents
- learning paths
- exercises

On the other site, after importing this course, all course elements were set visible and the introductory text was lost.

Please allow me to explain what I understand under "carbon copy". I mean the whole package of the course (all course settings, all course elements (learning paths, scorm elements, videos, links, documents, ...) I agree with you that it doesn't make sense to migrate students and results to a different site (as by definition not all students will be there, and they might have different ID's).
Hypothetically, if a teacher decides to take his course(s) and start his own chamilo server, he should only have to take 2 steps:
1. import courses list (including categories)
2. import courses content

As migrating users from one course(server) to a different course(server) would be a severe breach of privacy, I fully agree that this is not a wanted outcome.

Obviously there are edge cases. I can see the forum and dropbox being unclear.
Forum: auto populate forum categories and opening post if by teacher.
Dropbox: haven't used this, so can't give sensible feedback.

I'll schedule that for 2.0. Sadly, we won't be able to take care of this in detail for this version. In general, it's much easier for us to fix something if it is split in very specific elements (in this case "fix introduction section not saved in backup").
